Droid X May Be Best-Selling Android

July 28, 2010

Verizon Wireless estimated to have sold  300,000 Droid X smartphones, the powerful handset is fast becoming the best-selling Android-powered device. New adopters will have to wait until at least Aug. 4 to get one, since it is out of stock.

All this comes as Apple continues apple’s antennagate. Perhaps feeling a threat, the company posted on a web page a video of the Droid X supposedly having its own signal problems when held the same way that causes the iPhone 4 problems — with fingers touching the edge of the device. But several bloggers said they could not duplicate that in their own tests of the Droid X.

But that doesn’t mean the Droid X will be the “iPhone killer” it’s talked about? “I would not say that as yet,” said J.D. Power and Associates analyst Kirk Parsons. “Current iPhone users are very loyal and their satisfaction scores, as we measure it, are the highest among all branded mobile devices. The Droid X is a very good device, but the jury is still out if current iPhone customers will gravitate toward another phone, let alone an Android-based device.”

The Droid X, which has a 4.3-inch display, a one-gigahertz processor and other features, has its own problems, though on a smaller scale. Some units arrived with flickering or banding displays.

Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney told us last week that “Motorola has resolved the issue and is continuing to ship the phones. Any consumer who experiences a flickering or banding display should contact the Motorola customer  support center or Verizon Wireless.”

Got something to say?
