Cricket’s National Phone Recycling Program

May 22, 2009

Phone Scoop unveiled a new national cell phone recycling program in a recent post. Leap Wireless’s Cricket Communications will provide the drop off locations and online printable, postage-paid shipping labels for collection. ReCellular will be recycling, refurbishing, and when possible, repackaging the handsets to sell them in developing nations.

According to Cricket’s press release, posted by Business Wire, 130 million cell phones are discarded by Americans every year. Less than 5% of those are recycled leaving 65,000 tons of waste filling our nation’s junk drawers and landfills.

Cricket will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Rebuilding Together, a leading nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize communities. Cricket’s partnership with Rebuilding Together is a President’s Circle level national sponsor for 2009. Together they are focusing on issues of safety and homeownership among the elderly, the disabled, families with children and those impacted by the rising cost of living and falling social service budgets.

ReCellular Inc. is a leading collector, reseller and recycler of used wireless handsets and accessories. Approximately 50 percent of the cell phones collected by ReCellular are refurbished to near-new condition or otherwise processed for resale. Rebuilt phones are packaged and marketed to users in developing nations of the world where new phones are cost-prohibitive. Products that cannot be rebuilt are disassembled and responsibly recycled. No environmental waste goes to landfills, either directly or through intermediaries, making the process highly effective in reducing or eliminating solid waste.

“A typical phone contains materials like arsenic, zinc and lead, therefore throwing out old cell phones is not only wasteful, it’s dangerous. These materials can seep into groundwater or even end up in the air we breathe,” said Tim Ostrowski, vice president for Cricket who is leading the company’s environmental efforts. “We at Cricket feel a responsibility to do what we can to help protect our environment and our communities. By making this recycling program simple and convenient we hope customers will partner with Cricket to do something good for the environment and help raise funds for Rebuilding Together.”

Spotlight on Premium Member, Midway Distributors

“There’s been so much fraud in the wholesale industry it can make people scared to do business. With the Wireless Association Verified Seal customers know you’re legit.”
–Paul Babichenko, Founder of Midway Distributors

Paul Babichenko is the founder of Midway Distributors, a used cell phone wholesale distributor located in the heart of Boise, Idaho and primarily focusing on Motorola products. Since 2002 Midway has made it their chief mission to offer to their clients the best products and refurbishing services. Through their relentless efforts to source the hottest products at competitive prices, customers have come to rely on Midway as a trusted supplier.

Babichenko began working in the wireless industry when he started a brick and mortar retail business with brother Peter Babichenko, founder of Blue Oceans Distributing. Hunting for a more effective business model the entrepreneurial brothers turned to wholesale distributing.

Midway Distributor has been a Wireless Association Premium Member since 2000. We asked Paul Babichenko, Founder of Midway his opinion of the value of a Wireless Association Verified Membership.

“Being a Verified Member gives you comfort knowing you’re dealing with other good businesses. I display the Verified Seal in every email. There’s been so much fraud in the wholesale industry it can make people scared to do business. With the Wireless Association Verified Seal customers know you’re legit. The Verification Process was easy. I collected and submitted the necessary materials, it took a little time, but it was worth it,” said Babichenko.

“My favorite Membership Feature is the Feedback System. You know right away if someone you’re talking to is in good standing or has sold bad products. Also, I can give Feedback to businesses I work with. This keeps companies from passing bad business practices along to other companies. Also, the Inventory Wizard is not difficult. I have one of my staff members upload and maintain it easily.”

Midway Distributors’ warehouses retain a full stock of inventory with thousands of wireless telecommunication products available to their customers immediately upon request. As one of the leading refurbishers and distributors in the industry Midway leverages their procurement capabilities to secure extremely competitive pricing, which they ultimately impart to their customers. Shooting for the Stars: Blazing Second Quarter Reports for Apple

May 11, 2009

Boasting that you’re “years ahead”, like Apple executives claim, will probably raise some eyebrows and grate some nerves, especially those of the competition. Yet undeniably positive reports like the one recently posted by FierceWireless proves that Apple’s on top and rising, all thanks to the iPhone.

FierceWireless proclaims 3.8 million iPhone sales in Q2 of 2009 equaling earnings of $1.5 billion for Apple. That nearly doubles the 1.7 million sold and $378 million in revenue Apple reported one year prior. AT&T Mobility also reported activating 1.6 million phones in the same quarter.

According to the BBC, this 15% jump boosted the company’s shares 2.5% in after-hours trading. Analysts are reported to be congratulatory, but don’t see the sales or stock price as a sign of a more generalized economic lift. “Apple has been one of the few companies where business has been pretty strong throughout this economic downturn,” said Eric Kuby, chief investment officer at Northstar Investment Management. Kuby added, “any positive earnings surprise is good news” and these reports were “good for Apple, but not necessarily good for the whole market.”

With Apple’s success it doesn’t take much insight to perceive that competitors will continue producing touchscreen smartphones, yearning to pluck apple off its throne.
