RAZR Still Rules: RAZR V3 No. 2 Consumer Handset, Still a Staple and a Good Bet
December 9, 2008
A recent iPhone Alley post merrily announced the Q3 study by NPD Group revealing iPhone recently edged out Motorola’s RAZR for title of No. 1 mobile phone handset in the US. As recently as the October 2008 issue of RCR Wireless News reported Motorola Inc.’s reasonably priced, clamshell handset RAZR V3 as still reigning supreme.
Since 2005, the Motorola RAZR finished first as the top selling consumer handset in the US. Smartphone use has increased, but for the most part, they are still confined to the business market allowing the feature-packed RAZR to dominate, until now. Ross Rubin, NPD’s director of industry analysis said, “The displacement of the RAZR by iPhone 3G represents a watershed shift in handset design from fashion to fashionable functionality.”
Even with this revelation, the RAZR is still a staple of the everyday consumer and, according to Rubin maintains a “great mind-share” among consumers who still desire a voice-centric, slim-designed package. The RAZR has become the prime symbol of inexpensive to “free” handsets that attract subscribers.
